Black Walnut Project

This morning started out as any typical sunny, Autumn, Sunday morning — yard work. With the 20+ trees in our yard, we have to stay ahead of the leaves otherwise we get inundated with piles and piles. Of course, it’s not just leaves we’re after:

Now, given how fat and happy the squirrels have been, we knew our smallish black walnut tree had a productive year. It wasn’t until we reached that part of the yard, did we realize how much of a bumper crop we had.

At about this point, our impulse control started to wane. We had sticks. We had walnuts. We had a fire pit that hadn’t been used in a while. And, we had some undyed yarn sitting in the house. Thus was born the great Black Walnut Project, conducted by two ambitious individuals (both recovering from colds – maybe that was affecting our judgement), who were quickly losing interest in the remaining chores around the yard.

So, we started a fire.

We gathered the juiciest walnuts and put them together in a cheesecloth wrap and steeped them in some boiling water.

We ate lunch.

Then, we fastened some cloth over another pot and strained out the dark, inky liquid.

Black Walnut Project - Dye Bath

Virginia did the honors, and dyed a couple of skeins of yarn, including some handspun stuff that had been languishing in the stash for a number of years.

The resulting yarn was pretty nice – maybe not as dark as it could have been, definitely more interesting than what it was before.

And, I’m happy to say, the rest of the chores got done. (Well, most of them — there will always be another day for that.)

North

We’re back from a week up at Lake Superior, which is pretty much becoming our home away from home (at least it feels that way whenever we go). There is something so restorative about the lake and the surrounding rocky shores, and I often wonder how different my life would be if day after day I was surrounded by so much beauty.

Virginia Taking in the Lake

The early September air was cool and dry. Our hikes around the various parks were accomplished with much vigor (it also helped knowing an afternoon resting by the lake with a cold beer would follow).

For me, perhaps the most amazing part of our stay were the completely stunning sunrises that greeted us every morning. Each one a little different than the previous:

I consider myself a fairly cheerful person, but I can only imagine that a daily routine of sunrises and hikes and watching the water would have a pretty profound effect on my general outlook on life.

Until the day comes when that is possible, we will just have to get by with frequent getaways. And, once there, allow ourselves to absorb as much as we can of what the north has to offer.

The Fair

I’m not a huge State Fair fan, but I have to say getting there early is the way to go. There’s something almost magical about the stillness before the rush, before the quiet streets are overrun with crowds and the midday heat beats down.

Owls Helping Owls

There are a bunch of felted ambassadors ready to go out into the world and help out their real-world kin.

Felted Ambassador

When you add an ambassador to your collection of felted friends, a contribution (basically all of the proceeds minus shipping/listing fees) will be made to an appropriate organization. In this case, these owls will be supporting The Raptor Center.

I’m not associated with this group, but they do amazing work, both with education and with helping area raptors recover. These ambassadors do come with credentials, rest assured they are the real deal:

Sunset Sunrise Blanket

Virginia crocheted this from a selection of six colors of Palette yarn. It will brighten and warm the cloudiest and coldest of days. (It seems hard to believe that the temperatures can get so cold when we’re slogging through one of the hottest and muggiest summers on record, but it will and we’ll be ready).
